Auto Insurance For Teenager In Houston

Im 21 years old from Houston, been driving for two years now and yet I still have very expensive car insurance. I have no traffic tickets or accident in my record but still they always quote me with high rate. Why?

Mark

Houston Texas

Hi there Mark!

I know how you feel. Young male drivers always have most expensive auto insurance for teenager in Houston. The reason for this is because teen drivers represent a much higher risk when compared to mature drivers.

If you know the reason why auto insurance for teenager in Houston is high, then it would be easier for you to decide on how to lower it down.

Lack of Experience- this is the main reason why young drivers usually get higher car insurance rates. A teen driver will need to get driving experience for at least three years to get a better quote

Age- A person below 25 years of age usually pose a high risk to insurers especially they are young male drivers.According to statistics, this age group has a high accident rate compared to a different age group.

Vehicle- Teenagers usually opt to get a fast expensive cars. Sports and high performance car usually has a high car insurance premium rates. It best that we help teen drivers to understand that cheap and safe cars has cheaper car insurance rates than sports cars.

It is very important for teen drivers to understand that keeping a good driving record is the best way to get the lowest car insurance for teenager. Let them realize that they need to give importance to what they have and that it is a privilege to drive a car.

Teen Car Insurance Policy Texas

Reader’s Question:

Is it possible for a 15 year old like me to get car insurance in Texas if I only have a learners permit?

John

Houston TX

Most young drivers may satisfy legal requirements in auto insurance in Texas by being added to their parents’ car insurance policy. It maybe very costly to add the young driver to their parent’s car insurance policy but it is much cheaper than getting a separate policy. You may want to speak with your parent’s current auto insurance company if you want to be added.

If you wish to get your own car insurance policy in Texas then it is possible if you only have the learners permit but as a minor you will be required to have your parent or legal guardian to have sign the legal documents with you. Some insurance companies though will not allow you to get your own policy unless you are fully licensed.

After the start of your insurance policy, most insurance carriers would want you to get full license in a specific amount of time. Insurance companies’ guidelines differ so I suggest that you speak with them to get more information.

Getting Teen Auto Insurance Policy

I am 15 years old and hold a learner’s permit. I’m thinking of getting teen auto insurance for myself instead of being added under my parent’s car insurance policy. I think I’m old and responsible enough to take care of my car insurance needs. Now what worries me is it possible for me to get car insurance even if I only have learner’s permit?

Olive

Houston, TX

Hello there Olive! It’s nice to know that there are teen drivers like you who at an early age are responsible enough to think about their own teen auto insurance. However, I’m afraid to say that it’s going to be difficult on your part.

In general, car insurance companies use driving record as one of the factors that they consider in setting auto insurance rate for drivers. This driving record can be obtained from your state department’s motor vehicle record. And without a driver’s license it would be difficult for auto insurance companies to get hold of a person’s driving record.

However, I heard from a cousin who knows something about teen auto insurance, that if you have learner’s permit, some car insurance companies will allow you to purchase car insurance for yourself and have the policy started given that in 30 day period that they will give you, you can get a full driver’s license. If you failed to do so, said car insurance policy will be cancelled.

In addition, from what I know, there are still some car insurance companies who give teen auto insurance for those who only have learner’s permit. But just to make sure, I would say it best that you contact a licensed auto insurance agent in Texas so you could get the best help in securing your own car insurance.
